During the 1960’s, music stamped its roots on this city during
the swinging sixties when the Beatles were born. Four natives of
the city formed a group in 1957 and they started out as the Silver
Beatles and went gigging in Hamburg. When they came home in 1960,
they signed a contract to play in the local basement club in the
city called, the Cavern. In 1962 they recorded their first single,
which was, Love me do.
Beatle mania was about to erupt across the music world. The Metropolitan
Cathedral, which was also known as Paddy’s Wigwam because
of its shape, was built in the 1960s. For the next 20 years saw
high unemployment in Liverpool and the economy was in a serious
slump. In the 90s saw several regeneration programmes revitalise
the city and now the tide is turning for this great city.
What was once a city full of tenement Victorian slums has turned
the corner and now flaunts its stunning architecture, which reflects
the changing fortunes of Liverpool. The city has seen new hi-tech
firms, banks and also the tourism trade escalate in recent years.
If on a weekend visit or just a resident from the area, you will
have noticed a new upsurge in spirit and vitality of this great
city that has a very optimistic future.
